This is my absolute favorite type of book to convert into art. The reason why is that it was literally falling to pieces when I got it. This is a true trash to treasure piece. Upcycling, with old, damaged books.
This project was carved from a New Winston Simplified Dictionary for Young People (copyright 1937). Before beginning the actually carving, I had to do some re-structuring of the book. I think it turned out pretty well for an amateur! The pages were thin and somewhat brittle which made the carving of it require very gentle care. There were a few pages near the back that disintegrated before the blade instead of cutting which left behind and almost cotton like fuzz. Fortunately, when I add the finishing sealer, it adds a protective barrier which gives those old pages some new strength. The only con of adding the sealer is that it seals in that amazing old-book smell, and let me tell you, this books aroma was just lovely.
My original plan was to do all text, but I ran out of depth!
